Important News on Taiwanese ARCs.

If you’re a foreigner living in Taiwan, this is relatively interesting news. Taiwan is moving to an electronic visa/ARC/permanent residency system as of July. No longer will we have to rely on ARCs that look about as well-manufactured and sturdy as a ticket for a school disco.

Further: retina scans will be introduced at the airport. Wonderful. Now I need to worry about some git ripping my eyes out of my head so he can impersonate me, rather than just stealing my ARC and sellotaping his own picture on the top. If someone happens to have similar irises, or if some fraud occurs involving manipulation of my data on the system… what are they going to do to fix the problem? Issue me with new eyes?

Biometric security is bad, mmmkay…?

[Note: If you’re a googlemonkey looking for general info on ARCs, then try here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here. Be aware the whole system is currently changing though.]
